Doing nothing but looking at cheap Mustangs I want to buy. Sure the SN95s are not perfect but the freedom of a 5 speed with a V8 for under 5k is a very attractive option. But alas being 21 the insurance company would likely eat me alive. I still really want one though.

It's a daily occurance where a picture is posted on Houston Underground Racing of a Mustang being wrecked. So I imagine insurance does suck lol.

Not to fuel the fire, but insurance didn't matter here in Texas much whether I had a Civic or my Mach. It all depended on age. And when I first got the car at 17, it was a lot. It depends on a lot of things, but you might be surprised if you got a quote...

It is worth it. I bought an 04 in 05 when I was 21. Totally worth it. I just sold it a couple weeks ago and I may have cried a bit. Manly tears of course but still.

You only live once. Get it.

Also, that is a New Edge. The SN-95 ended in 97. It’s all the same platform though. Almost everything will bolt up to both.

I thought the model designation was SN95 and they called the facelift model a New Edge. Live and learn I guess.

But you are talking me into it. Maybe I will have to pull the trigger this summer

New Edges are technically SN-95s, you are correct.

They’re great dumb little cars. Second car I ever owned was a New Edge and I had a lot of cheap good fun in that car. Guy local to me has a very well-prepped autocross/track day example for sale for about what I sold mine for 4 years ago, very tempted to snatch it up.

Can confirm. I got one when i was 23 and the rate was less than my 2000 Accord V6 for some reason or other. This was in Georgia though.

The dollars-per-smile-per-mile quotient is incredibly favorable. Here’s my breakdown of the supposed drawbacks and why they’re not drawbacks:

1. They’re cheap: Yes, it’s reflected in the interior and some of the build quality, but you’re not paying anything for the interior or the build quality. I also think the interior is perfectly inoffensive for a cheap car, particularly compared to its GM competition at the time.

2. They’re really not particularly fast: it’s absolutely true, but they have a reasonable about of grunt and, more importantly, they sound glorious when properly uncorked. X-pipe plus bullet mufflers = glorious. This is a huge part of the smiles equation alone.

3. They don’t handle well: eh. They’re not Lotuses, but they’re pretty tossable and easy to grab by the scruff of the neck. Again, like the power situation, they’re not particularly fast around a corner, but they’re a ton of fun to drive like a ham-fisted idiot around a corner. Plus, they actually can make very competent corner carvers with a few grand in basic suspension work (see: Maximum Motorsports grip-in-a-box packages).

My from experience there is a bit of a divide on that. Their are people who only call it the SN-95 and those that call the face lifted the new edge without the SN-95 designation. You can guess what camp I am in.

It is all modified fox.
